Information Overload | The Reason you feel Lost

In today’s world, there is an overabundance of information available to us right in front of our noses. The only thing we have to do is look on our phones, or turn on the television to find any type of content you want. Information overload is also the reason many people feel lost and become confused, including myself. The more content you consume about all kinds of topics, the more belief and information systems you put inside your head. I am not saying we should not consume content at all. But there is a point where it starts to influence the way you live and many times you do not have to search for answers online. They are already inside you. I have had a time where I was searching for answers in life on the internet, and it only confused me more. That is why it is a wise decision to sometimes take a break from the internet and social media.

Information Overload | The Reason you feel Lost

Information Overload | Be More Conscious about Consuming

The internet, books and social media does have benefits to us for learning new things and connecting with other people around the world. We can learn things faster because of it and therefore we definitely should use it. But being more conscious about what type of content you consume has a positive impact on your mental health. Personally, I deleted apps like Instagram and TikTok, because I do not like short form content. I can generally avoid comparing myself to other people by not using these apps. I also feel less insecure, and I have built more patience. But this can be different for you. A different approach to this is that you take temporary breaks from social media and your phone. This way you have time to reconnect with yourself and improve your relationship with others. There are many other ways to be more aware of consuming content, and there is no right or wrong. But knowing that it can make you feel lost and disconnected is already the first step.

Start Creating More and be Proactive

The moment you start creating more, you have a way of getting all your thoughts and belief systems out of your head. Creating things can have a healing effect for information overload. This can be anything from writing, drawing, painting, or making music. When we consume content, we are in a passive state. Most of the time, we consume content sitting on the couch or on a chair. But if we create, we have a moment to get out of that passive state and develop our patience and perseverance. It makes us feel better because we not only have something to show to others, the process of creating changes our mood. Whenever I have a tough time and feel down, the moment my mood changes is when I paint, make music or write something down. I find more joy in life instantly. So whenever you have a tough moment, try to create something. See what it does to you.

Believe in Yourself and your Abilities

With a overabundance of information available, it is easy to compare yourself with others and take concepts very serious. I am also guilty of this. Whenever I watch a video or read a book, I sometimes instantly try to apply the information into my own life. While content can be a source of inspiration, everything you need to know is already inside of you. As long as you believe in your own capabilities and your own strengths, consuming content will not make you feel lost. Instead of trying to find answers in books or videos, try to find them in your everyday life. You do not learn how to live your life by reading books, you learn it by simply living.

Create an Environment of Tranquillity

The best way of dealing with the information overload is to create an environment that avoids it. This means that you take the steps that are necessary for you to eliminate information overload. This could mean leaving your phone in another room and having a quiet space where you can relax. Life becomes easier if you create an environment that works ideally for you. This way, you do not have to take detox retreats because you feel overwhelmed. It is a great power to know how you can handle modern technology by creating an environment that improves your mood and develops more patience and hapiness. When I was having a tough time, I avoided watching television, listening to the radio and checking my phone. I felt a deep peace because I temporarily shut myself off from the noise. If you can find a balance between consuming content and not overloading yourself with information, you will feel a lot better. I feel like our health system has developed a lot in healing physical problems, but is underdeveloped in healing mental health issues. We do not really know the impact of television, commercials, social media and all other noise to our mental health. If we can find a way to handle it, we will improve our lives and our wellbeing a lot.
